Out Of Privilege was founded by Byron Burkhalter in 2018. He started working with small groups going through individual journeys to understand and address white privilege and racism in their daily lives.
Dr. Byron Burkhalter earned his doctorate in Sociology from UCLA and has been focused on issues of race, biracial identity, whiteness and multiracial political coalitions in US history for more than 30 years. He has taught at the university level, spoken at large public rallies and published numerous pieces on these issues. His writings have examined racial and sexual discrimination in the workplace, the relevance of race in interracial relationships and racial and ethnic identities in online communities. Most recently he has been helping groups of people do the hard work to recognize the privileges afforded them by the racism and white supremacy systemic in their everyday lives.
Genevieve manages operations at Out of Privilege. She grew up as an outsider in the throes of the white supremacy pervading the southern United States. She has been in an interracial marriage for 25 years and has two bi-racial children working to find their voices in today’s narrative. Genevieve is on a journey to explore her connection to white supremacy and institutional racism in the Caucasian-centered world she has lived her entire life in. She recognizes the parallels between racism and the sexism she has experienced for a good portion of her life. She has spent more than 25 years leading global communications for technology companies. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and public relations from the University of Oklahoma.
